It’s rugby on skates. There aren’t balls or goals, but there’s plenty of blockers and bruises, which makes roller derby a great alternative contact sport. What’s even better is that Snohomish County is home to Jet City Roller Derby (JCRD), an Everett-based nonprofit organization that was established in 2006 with the mission to “improve Snohomish County by developing athletes, promoting healthy lifestyles, providing community service and partnering with local charities.”
For two decades, JCRD has provided an environment where people can train and compete in the sport of roller derby, and this is done through its three league teams, Bombers, Aviators and Skyraiders. They all bout against each other and put up a challenge against visiting teams in Washington state. JCRD’s Bombers squad is also a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), which is the sport’s international governing body that consists of more than 400 member leagues spanning six continents.
From Feb. 15-17, JCRD hosted the Rainy Season Rumble, a series of roller derby games at the Lynnwood Event Center, which featured juniors (under 18), women’s (WFTDA) and coed (Men’s Roller Derby Association (MRDA)) divisions. The home teams were Mob City (juniors), Jet City (WFTDA) and Puget Sound Outcasts (MRDA). Below are the results.
- Cherry City Blossoms (Salem, Oregon) won 3 out of 3
