Helen Maroulis, Israel Silva, Sergio Vega and LaDarion “Dee” Lockett: The names are synonymous with the sport of wrestling. So, what happened when all four arrived to Marysville to host a youth camp? Several dozen wrestlers aspiring to get to the next level woke up early and stayed late to make the most of the opportunity.
From April 3-5 at Marysville Pilchuck High School, Iridium Sports Agency, a national management firm dedicated to supporting fights, sponsorships, clothing, training and other aspects of the mixed martial arts industry, helped organize the Pacific Northwest-based wrestling camp. It was also the camp’s fifth-consecutive year returning to the area, staying true to the mission to “bring world-class wrestling to athletes who are hungry to grow.”
More than 170 campers attended each day, making the trip from Oregon, Idaho, Nevada and parts of Washington state. Top local wrestlers were also in attendance, such as Tre Haines (Arlington High School four-time state champion and University of Arkansas at Little Rock commit) and Mia Cienega (Everett High School four-time state placer (two-time champion and runner-up)). Below is a brief summary of how stacked the mentor list was for the camp.
- Maroulis is a three-time Olympic medalist (one gold, two bronze), 12-time U.S. World Team member (eight-time World Championship medalist (four gold, two silver and bronze)), six-time U.S. open champion and the first U.S. woman to win an Olympic gold medal in wrestling and to win two and three Olympic medals in wrestling.
- Silva, a four-time state competitor at Marysville Pilchuck High School (junior champion, senior runner-up, sophomore sixth-place finisher), was a two-time Junior College All-American at North Idaho College, finishing in the top three at the national tournament as a freshman and sophomore. That all happened before becoming a four-time World Team member for Mexico and earning three Freestyle Pan-American medals and serving as a 2012 Olympic alternate.
- Vega, a four-time Arizona high school state champion and a Junior Nationals freestyle champion, was recently awarded The Hammer, an annual award from Amateur Wrestling News, after capturing the national title for Oklahoma State in the 141-pound class over two-time champion Jesse Mendez of Ohio State.
- Lockett, Vega’s teammate, was a four-time Oklahoma high school state champion and tallied several pieces of hardware on the national and international stages in the youth divisions prior to college.
