Basketball Coach

Jack began teaching and coaching at Granite Falls High in 1959 and the following two seasons was at Arlington High. He spent the next fifteen years at Snohomish High as a teacher and head basketball coach, and finished his 30 year education career as Vice Principal of Snohomish Junior High. In 1954 he graduated from Lynden High and, while there, he played baseball and basketball. He excelled in basketball leading his team in scoring during his junior and senior years. As a senior, he led the league in scoring and was the top choice for the all-state team comprised of players who were members of the season’s non-tournament teams. He then played three basketball scholarship seasons at University of Washington before finishing his collegiate career at Western Washington University.

During his eighteen seasons as a high school basketball coach, his teams’ won 236 and lost 155. While at Snohomish, his teams played in five state tournaments (‘67, ‘68, ‘69, ‘70, and ‘77). His young 1970 team was a Class AAA State Tournament dark horse competing against a mix of four teams that had a combined record of 90 wins and 3 losses. But, by the end of the tournament, the Snohomish team knocked off previously unbeaten West Seattle and Pasco for two of its wins on their way to the State Championship. According to many of his coaching peers and former players, Jack was highly respected as an excellent teacher of basketball, a coach of the highest integrity, and an outstanding role model and mentor for his players. According to one of his players, ….. “He always made the most of what he was given and we loved him for it.”

Jack is an inductee of three athletic halls of fame: 1) 2008, Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, 2) 2011, Lynden High School Hall of Fame (as an athlete), and 3) 2015, Snohomish High School Hall of Fame.
