Dave Lyon
Snow Skiing
Dave grew up in the PNW and was ski-racing by age 5. As a junior racer, he trained under the direction of his mother, Jean Lyon, a member of the Lyon Racing Club. After graduating from Snohomish High in 1981, he raced with the Bogus Basin Ski Racing Alliance. While doing so, he was the Inter-Mountain Cup Champion and two-time NW Cup Overall Champion. In 1984, Dave enrolled at University of Wyoming and joined its NCAA #1 ranked Ski Team. He was a NCAA All-American in 1985, ‘86 and ‘87. Twice he was the Rocky Mountain Overall Champion. In 1985, as a U.S. Ski Team member, he was nationally ranked in slalom and in giant slalom.
After U. of Wyoming, he raced on the pro-tour until retiring in 1990. After a career in Ski Retail Management in the San Francisco Bay Area, he returned to the PNW to became owner/director of Lyon Ski School Inc. In 2000, Dave started Team Lyon Alpine Race Club. In 2011 it merged with Stevens Pass Alpine Club (SPAC) and Dave served as Program Director and Head-Coach. He continues in these roles with SPAC while living in Woodinville with his wife and two sons. Dave is a member of Professional Ski Instructors of America’s (PSIA) elite National Demonstration Team. He leads ski and ski racing clinics and summer camps and is education chair of American Alpine Club for the PNW Ski Association (PNSA). He also works for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association as a clinician and certification examiner for Alpine race coaches. He also works with U.S. Ski Team athletes/coaches on special projects.
