WOODWAY HIGH SCHOOL WARRIORS
Washington State 1983-84 Class *AAA Girls Basketball Champions
After placing third in the 1982 3A state basketball tournament and second to champions, Sehome, in 1983, the 1984 Woodway High girls’ basketball team continued its winning ways. They won the 1984 Washington state girls’ 3A basketball championship by defeating North Kitsap (24-1). According to Angie McGuire, athletic director at Edmonds-Woodway High …“this 1984 team, coached by legendary coach Bruce Evans, changed the landscape of girls’ basketball in the greater Edmonds Community and Snohomish County”. Again, said McGuire, ….. “I knew about almost every player on this team; they were larger than life. This team single-handedly gave young players like me someone to look up to and a dream to strive for”. Coach Evans characterized the team members as basketball players, who had ….. “an unspoiled eagerness for the game,”
The 1984 team was well known for its relentless “man-to-man defense” which helped them remain a highly respected state power. The team brought an excitement and pride in girls’ basketball to Snohomish County. Its overall season record was an impressive 25-2 and during league play they often won by 20 points or more. They won the Wesco, Northwest District, and Region I titles. On their way to the championship game they won three games on three consecutive nights. The championship game against North Kitsap was a classic “nail-biter” with the final score Woodway 54 and North Kitsap 52. In the final seconds of the game, Woodway’s Barb Wade hit a last second game winning basket. Teammates Kelly Joy was selected to the State All-Tournament Team and Carol Olson set a tournament record with 11 assists in a single game.
In 2015, the 1984 Woodway High Warriors State Championship team was inducted into the inaugural induction class of Edmonds-Woodway High’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
*Class 3A was the highest classification for high schools during this time.
