Event Recap: 3rd Annual Snohomish County Open Chess Tournament

Slow and steady won the race at the 3rd Annual Snohomish County Open Chess Tournament at the Sons of Norway Normanna Lodge in Everett on Sunday, Aug. 23, put on by the Lake Stevens Slugs Chess Club.

The competition was a five-round, G/25 + 5-second-increment, Swiss (Open, U1500, Unrated) format with many players traveling from cities across Washington state and some coming from our neighbors up north in British Columbia, Canada.

Below are the top three placers for each division and their respective prizes.

Open

  • 1st Place: Vladimir Belous (4.5 points, Woodinville, WA, $432)
  • 2nd Place (three-way tie, 4 points, $146.40): Ryan Porter (Bellevue, WA), Harishkumar Karthikeyan (Redmond, WA), Owen Scollon (Bellingham, WA)

U1500

  • 1st Place: Eric Reid (5 points, Arlington, WA, $259.20)
  • 2nd Place (five-way tie; 4 points, $51.84): Jeffery Burgert (Renton, WA), Gabriel Wong (Mill Creek, WA), Jordan Szeto (Richmond, BC), Atharva Singh (Bothell, WA), Alexander Gmyrek

Unrated Section

  • 1st Place: Steven Pelayo (5 points, $172.80)
  • 2nd Place: Junghyo Yoo (4 points, $158.40)
  • 3rd Place (two-way tie, 3 points, $36): Xavier Palathingal (Bothell, WA), Eric Sexton (Snohomish, WA)
